Oldale Town and Slateport City were separated by a river leading into a large bay. For most people, getting from one side to the other usually meant taking a roundabout route up through the northern edge of the region, or hopping on a ship from Petalburg. Either way was a hassle and bound to take several days.

For a Vermilion native like Locke, it was just a short swim.

Now, Ji-Ji could just as easily fly them over the river and the remainder of the route with plenty of time and energy to spare, but Locke preferred taking the shorter routes by foot. Get a little exercise, smell the roses and all that. And the weather was certainly nice enough, so who was he to pass up the opportunity for a nice, relaxing swim? They bent down to start untying the laces of their boots, unaware that something was approaching...

A pair of feelers appearing between their feet caused Locke to fall back with a yelp. The Nincada, just as surprised to see them, let out an equally frightened chittering noise. Before their heart could slow down enough to react the bug-type scurried back into its burrow, well-beyond reach.

“Guess I can’t let my guard down…” they muttered, reaching into their bag. Locke retrieved De-De’s Pokéball and released the Delibird, who wasted no time in poking around the area for other potential threats. Or snacks.

Feeling a little more prepared, Locke continued to strip down to his pants. Carefully placing his belongings in a watertight baggie, he stepped into the river until he was ankle deep. De-De was quick to follow, eagerly splashing in beside him. He took a moment to adjust to the chill, watching the flowing water distort their reflections.

Locke squinted. He could see something else too…

The wild Nincada escaped!

With a burst of speed a Pokémon exploded from the water! It struck out at De-De with enough force to send the Delibird flying out of the river, before disappearing again as quickly as it came. As it did, De-De’s shadow sprang to life, swiftly moving along the ground as though it were swimming, and then suddenly raced back towards the still-recovering penguin at breakneck speed.

“It’s coming again! Move!”

The Delibird followed the order without hesitation, rolling back to her feet as the Pokémon sprang out of the ground and back again in a flash of blue. The shadow raced wildly across the ground again, building up speed for its next strike. Locke kept their eyes fixed on its movements, waiting for an opportunity. Sure enough, it made another beeline for De-De.

This time they were ready for it.

“Now! Present!”

Before it could even fully emerge, De-De retrieved the ticking giftbox from her tail and launched it directly into her assailant’s face. The blast blew the Pokémon out of hiding, at last revealing the Greninja. Not taking any chances, Locke expanded a Pokéball in his hand and lobbed it at the shinobi frog while it was still dazed.

Locke attempted to capture the wild Greninja!
